Cattle

Foggy Hollow's Brangus bull, Rowdy, is very special and exceptionally gentle -

Brangus cattle are defined as three-eighths Brahman and five-eighths Angus. They were developed in the United States with the intent to capture the best qualities of the parent breeds. The Brahman breed is known for its general hardiness and its distinctive ability to thrive in extreme heat. The Angus breed is recognized as an excellent beef animal and for ease of calving, fertility, superior maternal behavior, and a docile temperament. Brangus cattle have proven themselves in climates that Angus have trouble tolerating, especially the hot, humid conditions along the Gulf Coast. In summer, Brangus calves gain more weight than pure Angus and are heavier at birth and at weaning. They also tolerate cold. Brangus have proven their worth as excellent beef cattle in adverse conditions that would be a significant hardship for their purebred Angus kin. In the United States, Red Angus and Black Angus are registered as two distinct breeds. The Black Angus is the country’s single most popular breed.

Rowdy's harem of cows are Beefmasters -

The Beefmaster breed is the first composite breed created in America. The exact mixture of the foundation cattle is unknown, but is thought to be about 25% Hereford, 25% Shorthorn and 50% Brahman. Beefmasters were first established on the Lasater Ranch, in Texas, in 1908 when Brahman bulls were purchased to use on Ed C. Lasater's Hereford and Shorthorn cows. Following his death in 1930, Ed's son Tom continued the breeding operation and creation of this breed. These cattle were put under and handled under range conditions that were often adverse, and a culling program was put in place based on disposition, fertility, weight, conformation, hardiness and milk production. Very little emphasis was put on coloration and horns. The Beefmaster breed is referred to as a "dual purpose breed," with excellent maternal traits and traits for growth and carcass quality. They are heat, drought, and insect resistant. They are gentle cattle.

Calves -

Calves are born after a nine-month gestation. They usually stand within a few minutes of calving, and nurse within an hour. Young calves are often left hidden by their mothers for the first few days.
